Hair Vitamins! Do They Work or Are They a Waste of Money?

Are you wasting your money on hair vitamins or are they important for the growth of thicker, healthier hair? There’s no doubt that good nutrition plays a role in the maintenance of healthy hair. Many underlying health conditions such as hypothyroidism, autoimmune disease, certain type of hormonal imbalances, poor nutrition due to calorie restriction, and protein deficiencies can result in thinning of the hair and even serious hair loss.

What about the normal individual who consumes an adequate diet and is free of underlying medical problems.

Can hair vitamins play a role in promoting hair health?

The vitamins that seem to play the most important roles in the maintenance of healthy hair include Vitamins A, B12, C, E, Niacin, Zinc, Pantothenic Acid, and Inositol. These vitamins work in various manners to promote healthy scalp circulation, encourage adequate sebum production, and stimulate production of melanin which preserves the natural pigment of your hair. Although, it’s not a vitamin, an adequate dietary protein and fat intake is also critical to maintaining the structure and health of the hair shaft.

If an individual eats a healthy, well balanced diet that’s adequate in protein, fresh vegetables, and fruits, it’s unlikely that further hair vitamin supplementation is necessary to maintain healthy hair. In fact, some of these vitamins, particularly Vitamins A and E, can be toxic in megadoses. For this reason, hair vitamins are not recommended for the person who eats a healthy, well balanced diet. In the individual who is unable to consume a diet adequate in vitamins, protein, and reasonable quantities of heart healthy fats, supplementation may be recommended.

There’s a common idea promoted in the lay literature that Biotin supplementation can aid in the prevention of hair loss. There are very few good studies available to support this idea and supplementation in the normal individual is not recommended at this point In cases where an individual is consuming a low protein or vegan diet, Biotin deficiencies can occur which may make a supplemental Biotin hair vitamin beneficial in these specific cases.

Some studies have shown that supplementation with fish oil capsules can have a positive effect on hair health due to their high concentration of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids can be found in a variety of natural sources such as fatty fish, certain nuts, and flaxseed. Most individuals don’t get enough of these “good fats” in their diet and supplementation may be justified and may have some positive impact on hair health.

At this point, there appears to be little additional benefits to taking hair vitamins in an individual who eats a nutritionally adequate diet, although supplementation with omega 3 fatty acids may play some role in promoting hair health. If an individual lacks the ability to consume a nutritionally adequate diet or has an underlying medical condition, hair vitamins may play a role in maintaining healthy hair.
